When Steve Jobs unveiled the iPad in a breathless, globally-broadcast event yesterday afternoon, few people were as bowled over as the man who took the photo displayed on the sleek product’s desktop, veteran photographer Richard Misrach.
“I was in bed watching Inglorious Bastards when I got a call from Jeffrey FraenkeL, my dealer in San Francisco, and he said, ‘Do you know what’s going on live here?’” Misrach told ARTINFO. “I was totally shocked. Naturally my other galleries started calling and my family was all atwitter, because it’s a whole different world.”

Misrach, a sought-after San Francisco artist who has been shown in galleries around the world, says that Apple first contacted him some time ago and asked to see about 10 images from his different series, but rejected them. Then two weeks ago, on the night of the opening of his current show at Chelsea’s Pace/MacGill gallery, he received an email from the company saying it had reconsidered and wanted to license Pyramid Lake (at Night), a 2004 photo he took at a Native American reservation in Nevada. Terms were set for a five-year exclusive deal, with the company saying they would use the image for screen-savers and other features. There was no mention of the iPad. “The funny thing is that I don’t even have a contract with them yet, so they must have decided on it at the eleventh hour,” Misrach says. “I’m sure they’ll send me one quickly now. But I’m very happy, I’m sure it’s fine, and the terms are good.”

The photograph, which was instantly seen around the world when photos of the device appeared on the front page of the New York Times’ site and elsewhere, is part of a series on the American desert that Misrach has been working on for 35 years. “It’s a long night exposure where the moon is lighting up the mountains in the distance,” he says. “I shot it on an 8×10 camera, so the quality is really beautiful and you can see star trails going through the sky.”

According to the photographer, this is the first time he has licensed an image for commercial use in his 40-year career–a deal he agreed to because he’s a fan of the company. ‘What’s funny is that for years I actually used the photo as my own screensaver,” Misrach says. “So I guess they know what they’re doing.”

Een indrukwekkend overzicht van Nederlands en Vlaamse ‘celebrities’, gefotografeerd door Stephan Vanfleteren, een van Belgiës meest vooraanstaande fotografen van dit moment.

Vanfleteren portretteerde acteurs, muzikanten, schrijvers en kunstenaars, allemaal personen die volgens hem iets te betekenen hebben, of hebben gehad; voor België en Nederland. De zwart-wit portretten zijn soms melancholisch, dan humoristisch of ontwapenend maar altijd beklijvend. De doordringende foto’s tonen de geportretteerden in al hun eerlijkheid en kwetsbaarheid, en vertellen zo een verhaal van professie en leven.

Vanfleteren won meerdere (inter)nationale fotoprijzen, heeft tentoonstellingen gehad in verschillende Europese musea en werkt o.m. voor De Morgen en De Volkskrant.Van de tentoonstelling verscheen een gelijknamig boek: Portret 1989-2009. Eerder verscheen van Vanfleteren ‘Belgicum’ een visueel testament van de laatste restanten van het België van einde vorige en begin deze eeuw.

Deze tentoonstelling is slechts één keer eerder te zien geweest in Gent, waar deze 59000 betalende bezoekers heeft getrokken. De tentoonstelling in Centre Céramique is gratis te bezoeken.

While the photographs don’t have to be taken exactly at the specified time, they ask that you try to stay within minutes of the target. Once you’ve taken a photo, submit it through submit.nytimes.com/moment (the link should be active at 15:00 U.T.C.).

The submitted photographs will then appear on both the Lens blog and on NYTimes.com, and notable photographs will selected and featured more prominently on the blog.

National Geographic Magazine komt met een collectie van alle nummers die het ooit heeft gepubliceerd. Bijzonder aan de uitgave is dat deze wordt uitgebracht als een externe harde schijf. Kopers kunnen op een partitie van 100GB hun eigen data kwijt.

De National Geographic-schijf is 160GB groot, en biedt naast een partitie met alle National Geographic-nummers een aparte partitie van 100GB waarop kopers naar wens eigen data kunnen opslaan. Ook is er ruimte vrijgehouden om toekomstige updates op te kunnen slaan; het is echter onduidelijk of toekomstige aanvullingen op de collectie gratis kunnen worden gedownload of apart moeten worden aangeschaft. De hardeschijf bevat alle nummers tussen beginjaar 1888 en 2008 van het beroemde tijdschrift met de gele kaft. Ook een groot aantal van de landkaarten die het blad heeft uitgebracht, wordt meegeleverd.

De software waarmee de nummers kunnen worden bekeken, draait op Adobe Air. Artikelen kunnen worden opgezocht op verschijningsdatum, maar ook op locatie en op thema. Voor de schijf, die wordt geleverd met een usb-kabel en een bonus-dvd, moet 160 dollar worden neergelegd, omgerekend 112 euro. Het is nog niet bekend of de schijf naar Nederland komt, en de harde schijf wordt momenteel niet naar adressen buiten Noord-Amerika geleverd. Nederlanders en Belgen die het complete National Geographic-archief op hun pc willen hebben, moeten het daarom vooralsnog doen met een dvd-box met alle uitgegeven nummers.

Hoe kijken wij naar Afrika? En hoe kijken de Afrikanen naar hun eigen continent? En hoe wordt dat vervolgens verbeeld in foto’s? Fotografe Sofie Knijff reisde voor VPRO’s Trendspotting naar de African Photography Biennal in Bamako.

Kijken Afrikaanse fotografen wezenlijk anders naar Afrika dan westerse fotografen? En hoe uit zich dat in hun fotografie? Fotografie uit Afrika staat centraal. Sinds 1994 bestaat in Bamako, de hoofdstad van Mali, een van de belangrijkste fotobiënnales ter wereld: Bamako Encounters.

Opmerkelijk dat in een van de armste landen ter wereld zo’n rijk aanbod aan Afrikaanse fotografie aan de wereld wordt getoond. Werk van inmiddels gerenommeerde fotografen zoals Pieter Hugo (Zuid-Afrika), Dago Ananias Leki (Ivoorkust) en James Iroha Uchechukwu (Nigeria).

Ook de Britse fotograaf Martin Parr is aanwezig in Bamako. Op uitnodiging van de organisatie toont hij daar zijn fotoserie Luxury waarin hij zijn lens richt op de scene van de internationale jetset. Een wonderlijk contrast met de omgeving waarin zijn foto’s worden getoond.
